Townhome Installation (hidden rain barrel) Part Two

Inside the garage, the three-quarter inch PVC is sloped down toward the rain barrel and terminated with a 90 degree elbow and another male threaded adapter. I purchased clear tubing (one inch ID) to connect the PVC to the adapter on top of the rain barrel. This solution worked out well since the barrel is at the back of the garage, the rain collector is not noticeable, and the overflow simply returns through the PVC pipe to the downspout.

Since I wanted to use the collected water for car washing and irrigation, I purchased a SHURflo 45 PSI irrigation pump (from Northern Tool) and attached it to the valve at the bottom of the rain barrel. From the pump, the water travels through clear tubing to another PVC pipe that runs straight along the garage wall to a hose reel. The hose reel can be attached to the rain water PVC pipe using a quick-connect adapter or to the hose water line using the same adapter. The pump is a 12-volt model so it can run off either a car battery or a power supply. I attached it to a Pyramid 10-amp power supply (from Amazon) that sits on the top of the rain barrel. Turning the power supply switch on activates the pump and pressurizes the line to 45 PSI.

Water from the house line has over 500 ppm of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). Water from the rain barrel has 10 ppm TDS. It would be 0 TDS except for roof debris. And there are no water spots from 10 ppm TDS water (especially using a Mr. Clean car wash/filter system)!

Since I have effectively pressurized the rain water I can also attach my PVC line to my in ground irrigation system. The irrigation control system doesn't know the difference so it will work properly. I have plenty of room to add more barrels in the back of my garage to increase the capacity of the system.

The entire system is up and working properly (the rain barrel is almost full) and I am very pleased with the final solution. This is an excellent way to setup a hidden rain barrel.
